American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Course

Lifeguard Instructor Course Description
Participants will learn to teach the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course and its accompanying components.

Lifeguard Instructor Prerequisites

  •  Be at least 17 years old by the last day of the course
  • Hold current certificates in lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR
  • Complete the Online Session, including the Precourse Exam, before the first class
  • Pass the swimming prerequisites: 300-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke (w/head down and good kick); 2-minute tread using legs only (arms must remain folded); 20-yard swim, retrieval of a 10-lb weight from 7-10 feet, return swim using legs only while holding the weight, and climb out of the pool in 100 seconds or less
  • Pass four rescue skill scenarios that test lifeguarding and CPR

Lifeguard Instructor Certifications Issued
Upon successful course completion participants will receive American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification valid for 2 years.

Optional Add-on Instructor Course
Title 22 Instructor – First Aid for Public Safety Personnel Instructor
Fee: $75  ●   How to sign up: Participants can register during the Lifeguard Instructor class

NOTE: Title 22 Instructor is an optional add-on course to the Lifeguard Instructor course. Registration and fees will be collected during the Lifeguard Instructor course and the training will be delivered at the end of the Lifeguard Instructor course.

On the first day of class, you must bring the following items:

  • Proof that you are at least 17 years old
  • Current lifeguarding, first aid, and professional CPR/AED certificates
  • The LIFEGUARDING INSTRUCTOR MANUAL (link emailed to you once you register)
  • The LIFEGUARDING PARTICIPANT MANUAL (link emailed to you once you register)
  • The SYLLABUS AND STUDY GUIDE (emailed to you once you register, please print)
  • A swim suit, towel, and comfortable clothes
  • An adult resuscitation mask with oxygen inlet (may be purchased during training)
  • An infant resuscitation mask (may be purchased during training)
  • A pen or pencil

Lifeguard Instructor Orientation & Precourse
The American Red Cross requires all new Lifeguard Instructors to complete an online Precourse and Orientation to the American Red Cross. After you register for the Lifeguard Instructor course you will receive an email with a link to the Precourse and Orientation that you must complete prior to the training.

The Online Session has 3 components: An Orientation to the American Red Cross; An Orientation to the Lifeguarding Instructor Program; A Lifeguarding Instructor Precourse Exam

Once these components are completed, a record of your work is saved in the American Red Cross Learning Center. During or after the Online Session, you will also be able to download (for free) electronic copies of the LIFEGUARDING INSTRUCTOR MANUAL and the LIFEGUARDING PARTICIPANT MANUAL. NOTE: You will not be able to continue in the Lifeguarding Instructor Course if you have not completed the Online Orientation by our first class meeting.

Program Policies
VISITORS – Only registered participants are allowed on the pool deck or in the class rooms during training. All visitors including parents must wait in the parking lot.

REFUNDS – No refunds will be issued once course fees have been submitted. In the event that a participant is unable to pass the prerequisites or final exams the participant may transfer to a class at a later date (if available) for a transfer fee of $35. If a participant is absent from any scheduled class days or times, the participant will not be offered a transfer or refund of any kind.

TRANSFERS – The class transfer fee is $35 and registered participants are required to notify Safe Swim at least 48 hours prior to the first class date that you are currently registered for in order to be eligible to transfer.
